When to book a stay in Valletta for less

Valletta is cheapest in early spring. April is usually the bottom of the market, up to half the price of the high season. The hottest and most crowded time is summer, from July to September, when the heat makes the narrow, steep lanes hard to explore and rates climb. The most pleasant and still reasonable months are April, May and June, then September, October and November. The start of the week tends to be cheaper than the weekend. Unlike resorts fed by charter flights, Valletta has a small supply of pricey boutiques, so it is worth booking ahead, around three weeks before arrival, as the good addresses sell out fast.

Where to look for a stay in and around Valletta

Valletta is small enough to cover entirely on foot, and most hotels are a few minutes from the main Republic Street and from the harbour. There is no cheap and expensive district in the usual sense; the price depends more on the standard of the property and the view than on the address. If you want a lower rate and a beach, it is often cheaper in the neighbouring towns across the bay, such as Sliema or St Julian's, a short ferry or bus ride from Valletta. Valletta itself is best when you want to stay in the heart of the monuments and have the city to yourself in the evening, as many visitors head back to hotels outside the capital.

• For couples. Intimate boutique hotels and suites in historic palazzos, which are the most common type here. In the evening it is a short walk to restaurants and terraces overlooking the Grand Harbour.
• For families. Apartments with a kitchenette and family rooms work better than small boutiques. The narrow lanes and steps can be a challenge with a pushchair, so pick a property near Republic Street.
• First time in Malta. Staying in Valletta itself puts the monuments on your doorstep, from St John's Co-Cathedral to the Grandmaster's Palace, with no daily commute.
• With breakfast. Many boutique hotels include breakfast in the rate, which helps you set off early before it gets hot and crowded around midday.
• Near the airport. Malta Airport (Luqa, MLA) is close, a quarter of an hour by car from Valletta, and some hotels offer a transfer, which makes an early departure easy.
